According to the latest data report on internet activity released by the ACCC, mobile devices remain the most common method of accessing the internet amongst Australian consumers. However, the largest volume of data continues to occur over fixed lines. The data report issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for the year ending December 31 2018 all provides some revealing insights on the number of retail services in operation (SIOs) based on connection type amount of data transferred and download speed within Australia.
40 million SIO’s
By the end of last year, the total number of SIOs fell just short of 40 million. 24.3 million were mobile devices whilst 8.4 million were wireless broadband and 7.2 were fixed line internet connections. ACCC Commissioner Cristina Cifuentes says the report delivers clear indication that whilst most consumers use their mobile device to access the internet most often. When it comes to downloading significant volumes of content, they tend to prefer their fixed line connections.
Streaming and social big drivers of traffic
91 per cent of the total volume of data collected was through fixed line technologies. Mobile devices and wireless broadband were responsible for 6 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. Ms Cifuentes says the volume of data download will grow exponentially as users continue to gravitate towards video streaming services such as Netflix, social media sites and applications such a online gaming which are content rich and include video components.
24 Mbps most popular speed
Ms Cifuentes says the most popular speed for fixed and wireless broadband SIO’s with the exception of mobile devices is under 24 megabits per second. According to the report, speeds at that threshold or under accounted for 61 per cent of all fixed line and wireless SIOs excluding mobile devices. Between 24 to 50 Mbps 25 per cent. Between 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps 8 per cent and 100 Mbps or above 5 per cent.
